Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research
Project Number: 8062-21000-049-008-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jun 11, 2026
End Date: Jun 10, 2027
Objective:
This proposal aims to provide the foundational knowledge necessary to enhance wheat adaptation, aluminum resistance, and ultimately, yield in acidic soil environments. We will employ an integrated approach, combining physiology, genetics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics to address three primary objectives:
1. Elucidate the function of TaNIP1;2: We will investigate the contribution of the aluminum-resistance gene TaNIP1;2, focusing on its interaction with the known gene TaALMT1 and its role in enhancing resistance.
2. Characterize genetic variation: We will analyze natural variation in the TaNIP1;2 gene across a broad panel of representative wheat genotypes.
3. Develop molecular markers: We will identify and validate molecular markers tightly linked to the aluminum-resistance alleles of TaNIP1;2 to enable marker-assisted selection.
Approach:
The collaboration will generate wheat genetic materials to assess the interactions of different resistance mechanisms and their effects on wheat performance and yields on acidic soils. The approaches involve using molecular, biochemical, genetic, and genomics tools for gene isolation, functional analysis, and the creation of molecular markers. Additionally, traditional breeding and genetic strategies will be employed to develop elite wheat cultivars that are better adapted to acidic soil conditions.
