Research Project: Impacts of Reduced Lignin Alfalfa on Forage Yield, Fiber Digestibility, and Fine Root Production

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 5062-21500-001-037-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2026
End Date: May 31, 2027

Objective:
1) Utilize an existing 4 year dataset to evaluate the impacts of alfalfa reduced-lignin traits, fall dormancy, and harvest intensity on forage yield and nutritive value, and to explore linkages among these factors and fine root production, root turnover, and soil C cycling. 2) Utilize computer images and cell wall chemistry data to evaluate alfalfa stem lignin content and distribution.

Approach:
For objective 1, the cooperator will utilize an existing four-year dataset to evaluate the impacts of alfalfa reduced-lignin traits, fall dormancy, and harvest intensity on forage yield and nutritive value, and to explore linkages among these factors and fine root production, root turnover, and soil organic matter. For objective 2, cooperator will utilize existing datasets to conduct analysis of cell wall images and cell wall chemistry of alfalfa stems to evaluate lignin content.
