Research Project: Microbiome and Resistome Response to Foliar Antibiotic Application in Commercial Citrus Production

Location: Cereal Crops Research

Project Number: 5090-21430-012-008-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2025
End Date: Aug 31, 2026

Objective:
Citrus Greening is an emerging disease threating entire U.S. industry, and antibiotics are one of few methods of disease control. Findings of this research illustrate antibiotics in citrus groves are effective and low risk. ARS and cooperator scientists will share data related to this research project which will result in a completed manuscript to convey results to U.S. citrus farmers and stakeholders.

Approach:
Cooperators obtained NIFA grant to conduct research at field sites located in Florida. Cooperator's employees conducted plant and soil sample processing, prepared libraries for microbiome sequencing, and preliminary data analysis. In former postdoctoral position, under supervision from PI at Michigan State University, ARS scientist conducted metagenome sequencing and qPCR analysis on these samples. ARS scientist conducted additional data analysis. ARS scientist and all cooperators will contribute to the writing of the manuscript. ARS scientist and cooperators will edit as needed for peer-review process.
