Research Project: Optimizing Nitrogen Relationships Using Epigenetic Informed Networks

Location: Global Change and Photosynthesis Research

Project Number: 5012-21000-032-036-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 25, 2025
End Date: May 30, 2026

Objective:
The objective of this work is to understand how legumes sense, integrate, and respond to nitrogen and carbon/energy status through developing new model methods to increase the predictive accuracy of gene regulatory networks by combining transcriptomic and epigenetic data. This work will enable the development of strategies to achieve maximum crop yield and quality.

Approach:
To accomplish the research objectives, ARS will work closely with the Cooperator to 1) generate data on the physiological, transcriptomic, and epigenetic responses to a matrix of treatments in legumes, 2) create and evaluate an epigenetic-enhanced network inference tool, and 3) rapidly validate target genes of transcription factors via transient assay in legumes.
