Research Project: Genomic Diversity and Genotypic Assessment of Pecan and Cotton

Location: Crop Germplasm Research

Project Number: 3091-21000-046-014-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2025
End Date: Aug 31, 2026

Objective:
Analyze genomic and genetic data of pecan and cotton before and after accessions are added to the National Collections with the purpose of preserving and disseminating information that contributes to an increased understanding and improvement of both species.

Approach:
The germplasm collections of pecan and cotton contain several thousand different accessions representing a continuum between wild and domesticated. Existing and new genotype data (including both SNPs and sequence data) will be analyzed using current bioinformatic tools to assess the diversity, purity, and variability of germplasm accessions. These assessments will inform decisions of how best to maintain, conserve, and expand the genetic diversity of individual accessions.
