Objective:
This collaborative research aims to (1) identify genetic elements important for nutrient metabolism in fruits and vegetables; (2) elucidate the mechanisms underlying nutrient metabolism; and (3) test the potential of identified genes for developing crops with enhanced nutritional quality along with other agronomic traits.
Approach:
Multiple approaches including methods of genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and omics will be used. Gene discovery will employ QTL-seq, genetic mapping, and/or comparative genomics to identify candidates. Functional studies will include such as gene editing, overexpression, promoter analysis, and/or protein characterization assays. Both conventional breeding and genetic approaches will be used to evaluate the potential of these genes for improvement.
