Research Project: Interventions to Aid the Production of Safe and Wholesome Meat and Dairy Products in an Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Manner

Location: Food and Feed Safety Research

Project Number: 3091-32420-001-030-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2025
End Date: Aug 31, 2027

Objective:
Work under this collaborative relationship will lead to the development of new environmentally sustainable approaches for treating feedstuffs to reduce pathogenic and antimicrobial resistant microbes while improving nutritional characteristics. Future work seeks to optimize these new technologies via improved formulation and application protocols. The goal of the work is to develop practical and cost-effective new technologies and protocols that can be implemented in commercial livestock production enterprises.

Approach:
Scientists will conduct in vitro and in vivo research with food producing animals to investigate potential interventions to reduce the carriage of pathogenic and antimicrobial resistant microbes while improving nutritional characteristics. These studies will employ microbiological studies to test and characterize potential interventions and to characterize microbial populations within animal hosts.
