Research Project: Biobased Antiviral Treatments for Bee Pollinators

Location: Invasive Species and Pollinator Health

Project Number: 2030-30500-001-004-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2025
End Date: Dec 31, 2027

Objective:
Honey bees are essential agricultural pollinators, and they are threatened by record declines that are closely linked to viral pathogens. This project will develop sustainable technologies and treatments to strengthen bee immunity and virus resistance. The outcomes of this work will support beekeeping industries, food security, and ecosystem biodiversity.

Approach:
We will use biotechnological approaches to develop novel therapeutic treatments for bees. This approaches offer several benefits, including cost-effectiveness, scalability, and practical delivery. In parallel efforts we are developing natural product drug discovery pipelines to identify antiviral compounds from nature that can be used as treatments to improve bee health.
