Objective:
To characterize dry bean genotypic variability for plant vigor and root growth in organic production.
Approach:
Black, pinto, and yellow bean cultivars and breeding lines (24 entries) will be grown at two commercial organic farms in Michigan. Soil quality will be assessed through structural, chemical, and biological evaluations. Beans will be evaluated for germination percentage, seedling vigor, root and shoot biomass at three time points in the growth cycle. Seed yield and seed quality at harvest will be evaluated and relationships with downstream end-use quality will be determined.
