Research Project: Overseas Exploration, Quarantine and Development of New Insect Biological Control Agents for Monoecious Hydrilla (Hydrilla Verticillata)

Location: Invasive Plant Research Laboratory

Project Number: 6032-22000-013-134-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: May 17, 2024
End Date: Sep 30, 2024

Objective:
Invasive aquatic weeds impact North America's waterways, affecting navigation, aquaculture, fishing, and other ecosystem goods and services. These funds will support research into finding and testing sustainable biological control for such targets as Nymphoides cristata, Nymphoides peltata, Azolla pinnata, Ludwigia spp. and others. -Conduct foreign surveys in Korea, Japan, Phillipines and Australia to look for suitable agents for North American aquatic invasive weeds. -Where appropriate, ship insects to US-based quarantine facility or import into Australian Biological Control Laboratory facilities for preliminary host range testing. -Summarize results of initial screens for host affinity and report those.

Approach:
ARS will facilitate the surveys, imports and host range testing of potential agents for emerging aquatic weeds.
