Research Project: Development of a Mobile Robot for Measuring Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Agricultural Fields

Location: Soil and Water Management Research

Project Number: 5062-11120-001-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2023
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
To develop and test a new technology to measure greenhouse gas fluxes from cropped fields that has the potential to increase temporal and spatial sampling of greenhouse gas fluxes and increase the overall accuracy compared to existing methods.

Approach:
Cooperator will develop a prototype rolling chamber for measuring greenhouse gas emissions. Engineering effort will focus on the electro-mechanical design of the system. Software engineering will be necessary to enable the automated operation of the chamber. The system’s performance will be compared to industry standard chambers on ARS managed research plots at two different locations. Cooperator will provide the engineering and project management personnel to undertake the development and testing components of this project. ARS will provide overall advice and guidance on the project and will provide conventional flux chambers and analyze samples for greenhouse gases in the ARS lab.
