Research Project: Plant Exploration in Wisconsin to Collect Woody Landscape Germplasm

Location: National Germplasm Resources Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-302-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Mar 31, 2024

Objective:
The objectives of the plant exploration are: 1) Obtain germplasm of wild species of Acer (including A. nigrum, A. saccharum, A. spicatum), Amelanchier (including A. arborea, A. laevis, A. sanguinea, A. stolonifera (spicata)), Diervilla lonicera, and Tilia americana. 2) Document populations of the species from which germplasm is collected.

Approach:
Germplasm of Acer, Amelanchier, Diervilla, and Tilia will be collected from wild populations in Wisconsin. Germplasm will be collected in the form of seeds and will be documented with locality, latitude and longitude, elevation, plant description and growing environment. Herbarium voucher specimens will be made as appropriate. Seed will be sent to the appropriate sites of the USDA National Plant Germplasm System. A detailed trip report, including information on all samples obtained, will be provided to ARS.
