Research Project: Putting Phenotypic and Genotypic Tools to Work for Improving Walnut Rootstocks: 2022

Location: Crops Pathology and Genetics Research

Project Number: 2032-22000-017-034-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2022
End Date: Jun 1, 2023

Objective:
Objective 1. Traditional and large scale in vitro propagation of a genetically diverse collection of Juglans hypbrids exhibiting putative disease resistance. Objective 2. Outreach and development of new, and existing, field trials examining performance of elite rootstock germplasm.

Approach:
This project is designed to exploit our prior work where we have identified and characterized walnut rootstock genotypes which exhibit elevated levels of resistance to nematodes, Phytophthora spp, and Agrobactertium tumefaciens infection and resulting disease. Here we are proposing to propagate and examine these putative disease resistant and commercially viable elite pathogen-and-stress-resistant rootstocks genotypes in wide range of field trials across the walnut growing regions of California.
