Research Project: Research Support for Watershed and Basin Hydrology and Water Quantity in the Arid and Semi-arid Southwest, USA

Location: Southwest Watershed Research Center

Project Number: 2022-13610-013-018-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2022
End Date: Jul 30, 2022

Objective:
To evaluate the utility of innovative, distributed, low impact development (LID) infrastructure and best management practices (BMPs) for wet weather capture and drinking water aquifer recharge in the arid and semi-arid southwestern USA.

Approach:
The approach is described as follows: 1) Continue monitoring rainfall, runoff, water levels in a detention basin, groundwater levels, and water levels in two dry wells using instrumentation established during the first phase of this project. 2) Acquire the most current watershed characterization data. 3) Use AGWA to construct a KINEROS2 watershed model representation of the area draining into the Four Plex recreation area of Ft. Irwin. 4) Conduct simulations using observed precipitation inputs. 5) Develop an internal ARS technical report describing data sources, model construction, and model testing.
