Research Project: Determining the Repercussions of Declining Test Weight on Seed Composition & Value (UGA)

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6070-21220-069-124-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2021
End Date: Sep 30, 2022

Objective:
Identify management and genetic factors that can reverse the decline in test weight, determine the impact of increased test weight on seed protein content, nutritional quality, market value, sucrose content and develop breeding strategies which will simultaneously incorporate improved test weight and protein content into high yielding varieties.

Approach:
Collect test weight, agronomic traits, and seed composition data from 180 elite diverse lines. These lines will be yield tested at 3 locations with 3 replications per location. These lines have genetic variations in seed composition, seed size, and maturity as well as yield. The impact of seed composition, agronomic traits as well as environments on test weight will be analyzed. These lines will be genotyped with SoySNP6k Infinium chips. Genome-wide analysis will be performed to understand the genetic control of test weight. In addition, 50 lines with various seed compositions, maturities, and seed sizes will be planted at two planting dates (early and late). Test weight, agronomic traits, and seed composition data will be collected from these lines at each planting date. Analysis will be performed to understand the impact of planting dates in a single environment on test weight.
