Research Project: Integrated Management of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) in the Intermountain West

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-142-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
The objectives of these projects are to identify varieties of wheat and barley with resistance, or with the least susceptibility to Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) for use in Idaho production. Also, various combinations of varieties, fungicides and timing of application of fungicides to improve disease control and reduce mycotoxin contamination in grain production.

Approach:
We will screen wheat and barley cultivars for Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) susceptibility only using Fusarium fungal strains endemic to the area using cultivars that are widely available to producers, newly released cultivars and advanced breeding lines. Various fungicides will be applied to a subset to test efficacy of timing and various combinations.
