Research Project: Genomic Sequence of the Soybean aphid Biotype 3, and Cotton Aphid and respective Symbionts

Location: Soybean/maize Germplasm, Pathology, and Genetics Research

Project Number: 5012-22000-023-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2021
End Date: Sep 14, 2022

Objective:
Sequence and analyze the genomes of the soybean aphid Biotype 3 (Aphis glycines) and its sister species the cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) and associated symbionts.

Approach:
This agreement aims to compare the nuclear genomes of the sister species, the soybean and cotton aphids, and the cohort of symbionts they harbor. Genomes of the soybean aphid Biotype 3 and the cotton aphid will be sequenced and annotated. Similarities and differences will be identified. Sequences for symbionts identified in both aphid genomes will be extracted, annotated and analyzed.
