Research Project: Pollen Identification and Analysis

Location: Carl Hayden Bee Research Center

Project Number: 2022-21000-022-051-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jul 25, 2021
End Date: Sep 30, 2022

Objective:
The goals of the project are to: 1) Identify the plant source of pollen samples collected by the research team at Oregon State University using meta-barcoding. 2) Quantify the concentration of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids in the pollen samples. 3) Provide the information to our collaborator at Oregon State University and to NRCS PLANTS database for inclusion in the new Pollinators section.

Approach:
For Objectives 1and 2, standard, widely accepted protocols will be used for conducting meta-barcoding for plant identification, and analysis of omega 3 and 6 levels using fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis. FAME compounds will be quantified by comparison of characteristic mass fragments with known amounts of authentic standards.
