Research Project: Mapping and Modeling Conservation Practices and Ecosystem Services in Grazing Lands

Location: Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 8070-21000-010-010-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 4, 2021
End Date: Jul 1, 2022

Objective:
Use literature review and model sensitivity analyses to better model temperate humid pasturelands using the Agricultural Policy/Environmental extender (APEX) simulation model. Specific objectives include: 1) Parameterize APEX model for use with cool-season temperate forage species based on extant pasture data; 2) Provide improved parameter sets and associated data for use by Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) Grazing Lands team members and in decision support tools.

Approach:
Tools for evaluating the response of ecosystem services to conservation and management practices are needed for pastures. While some such tools, including the widely used Invest models, exist, not all processes of interest may be available. Use of ecosystem service models at landscape scales and for comparing scenarios requires integration and harmonization of multiple data sets from disparate sources. The deliverables from this work will include a white paper on the capabilities of existing tools for modeling ecosystem services in pastures, and workflows facilitating the use of these tools at landscape and regional scales.
