Objective:
The goal of this project is to develop novel strategies for identification, tracking, and control of vine mealybugs in California grape production. Project objective is to use genomic technologies to characterize vine mealybug populations in California for the purpose of tracking pest movement, for future use in research regarding insecticide resistance, and development of novel control methods based on genomic targets. Cooperator will assist with genome sequencing of vine mealybug populations and ARS researchers will develop genetic markers based on genome sequences.

Approach:
ARS researchers will collect vine mealybugs from California vineyards and provide samples to cooperator. Cooperator will perform whole genome sequencing of vine mealybug samples using next generation sequencing platforms and perform genome assembly with established computational procedures. ARS researchers will identify 100-200 molecular marker sequences from whole genomes that will be tested for ability to differentiate vine mealybug populations in California.
