Research Project: Systematic Identification of Oomycete Plant Pathogens Important to California Specialty Crops

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-22000-019-020-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Nov 1, 2020
End Date: Apr 30, 2023

Objective:
The objective is to develop a systematic approach for identification of oomycetes using the rps10 gene as a new barcode locus. We will also further develop the use of this locus for metagenomics studies to characterize oomycete communities in different crop production systems.

Approach:
A wide range of Oomycete taxa will have the rps10 locus sequenced and added to an online database developed by our collaborator. Techniques were developed to amplify this locus from field samples followed by Illumina sequencing to enable identification and quantification of oomycetes in in the field. These techniques will be further optimized and made available to the research, regulatory and commercial laboratories.
