Research Project: Drought Resiliency for the Farm-Yield Limitations of Commercial Soybean Varieties Under Drought

Objective:
Develop drought-tolerant cultivars adapted to locations in Texas and other drought-prone U.S. environments that will aid farmers with variety choices and guide new public-private breeding efforts to fix the drought problem.

Approach:
Evaluate a drought-tolerant inoculant at research stations in Jackson Springs, NC and Fayetteville AR. The experimental design will be a RCB with 3 treatments 5 replicates, and 2 environmental conditions (irrigation vs. non-irrigation). This test employed will cultivar USDA-N7003CN as a control plus an additional drought resilient type. Nodule and root samples will be collected 10 weeks after planting/inoculation for analyzing nodule properties. Total nodule numbers will be compared for all treatment combinations. Distribution of nodules on the taproot will be compared as well. Seed yield, and seed protein and oil content will be assessed after harvest.
