Research Project: Drought Resiliency for the Farm-Yield Limitations of Commercial Soybean Varieties Under Drought (Year 3 of a 3-year project - KS)

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6070-21220-069-089-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2020
End Date: Sep 30, 2021

Objective:
Develop drought-tolerant cultivars adapted to locations in Kansas and other drought-prone U.S. environments that will aid farmers with variety choices and guide new public-private breeding efforts to fix the drought problem.

Approach:
Yield test at least 60 commercial varieties from maturity groups III through V plus checks in 4 replications at Salina or Manhattan, KS in standard yield plots. Wilting under drought stress conditions will also be evaluated. Take wilting scores on any of the 14 to 16 OVT trials in Kansas that experience drought stress. A small set of representative genotypes with extreme responses to drought stress will be selected from each maturity group (III through V) based on yield data from multiple stress environments. They will be subjected to controlled irrigation treatments to validate yield response to stress.
