Research Project: Discover Sources, Genes, and Develop New Varieties and Germplasm with Improved Meal Protein and Amino Acids

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6070-21220-069-068-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2020
End Date: Sep 30, 2021

Objective:
Objective 1. Develop soybean germplasm with increased seed protein content, competitive yield compared to elite cultivars. Objective 2: Identify, confirm and characterize genes responsible for seed protein synthesis and storage. Objective 3: Incorporate value-added traits and key abiotic traits into high-yielding and high-meal protein lines. Objective 4. Use near-isogenic lines (NILs) to evaluate the effect of high vs average protein soymeal on growth and development of poultry (collaboration with nutritionists and poultry experts).

Approach:
Conventional breeding and molecular mapping approaches will be used to accomplish these objectives.
