Research Project: Precision Application of Conservation in Upper Midwestern Cropping Systems

Location: Grassland Soil and Water Research Laboratory

Project Number: 3098-13610-009-087-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Jun 30, 2023

Objective:
The objective of this project is to evaluate the potential environmental tradeoffs in implementing precision conservation. This will be used to guide potential precision prescriptions for conservation to portions of fields where the conservation practice will have the greatest environmental benefit if producer time or resources are limited.

Approach:
Cover crops will be planted at different landscape positions in a field grown to row crops. Rainfall simulation studies and soil health metrics will be used to evaluate the impact of this practice at each landscape position on water quality.
