Research Project: Understanding Effects of Nitrogen Ecology on Virulence and Competitiveness of Zoonotic Pathogens

Location: Food and Feed Safety Research

Project Number: 3091-32000-036-17-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Aug 31, 2021

Objective:
This study will support collaborative work to investigate nitrogen metabolism by select zoonotic pathogens in pure and mixed cultures with gut microbes.

Approach:
This work will examine anabolic and catabolic metabolism of dietary nitrogen compounds and will involve some molecular work to characterize the effects on microbial expression of enzymes and virulence factors. Culture studies will be conducted and samples collected for transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses.
