Research Project: Assessing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Open-lot Dairies and Land-applied Dairy Cattle Manure

Location: Livestock Nutrient Management Research

Project Number: 3090-31630-006-048-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Aug 31, 2022

Objective:
Quantify greenhouse gas emission (nitrous oxide and methane) from open-lot dairy pens and land-applied dairy cattle manure.

Approach:
Emissions of greenhouse gases (nitrous oxide and methane) will be measured at a commercial dairy and from small plots that received land-applied manure. Ten automated flux chambers will be spaced equally across the pen or field. Utilizing a multiplexer system, air samples will be collected sequentially every 5 to 10 minutes to quantify emission rates. Sampling will be conducted across seasons to assess annual emission rates.
