Research Project: Modeling the Manureshed in the Susquehanna River Basin

Location: Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 8070-13000-015-010-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2020
End Date: Jan 31, 2023

Objective:
This project focuses on modeling the water quality outcomes of implementing manureshed management strategies. Objectives are to: (1) develop scenarios to compare business as usual and manureshed management strategies in the Susquehanna River Basin; (2) Carry out Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) modeling to assess the outcome of manureshed management; and (3) support national, SWAT modeling of the manureshed.

Approach:
Manureshed management is part of Long Term Agroecosystem Research Network (LTAR)'s effort to guide the sustainable intensification of U.S. agriculture, connecting livestock and crop production systems. This project will develop protocols to simulate manureshed management with the Upper Chesapeake Bay region of LTAR, simulating manureshed management in SWAT for the Susquehanna River Basin and extending these protocols to LTAR researchers working at national scales. Initially, business as usual and manureshed scenarios will be developed for the Susquehanna River Basin. Then SWAT modeling will be performed to quantify watershed outcomes of the different scenarios. Finally, approaches developed in the Susquehanna will be conveyed to LTAR researchers working across the country to support a national analysis.
