Research Project: Acquisition and Establishment of Rose Virus Positive Control Collection

Location: National Germplasm Resources Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-302-023-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2019
End Date: Sep 30, 2021

Objective:
The overall goal of this agreement is to support Foundation Plant Services (which maintains USA rose germplasm), NPDN diagnostic labs, and other private and government diagnostics and research entities by providing standardized rose virus controls and virus detection methods. This enhances the production of clean plant material. USDA, ARS, NGRL works with the National Clean Plant Network managed by APHIS. NGRL also aims to: 1. Acquire rose varieties infected with known viruses and to establish rose virus collection; 2. Utilize established diagnostic protocols to identify known viruses before adding to the collection; and 3. Compare these protocols to identify the most efficient way to test for rose viruses prior to acquisition and inclusion in the curated virus collection.

Approach:
ARS proposes to acquire rose varieties for the establishment of rose virus curated culture collection. Under this agreement all partners will participate in diagnostic methods development, methods comparisons, and optimization. Analyze data and establish criteria for acceptance of infected rose varieties to the rose virus culture collection. Maintaining live plants and distribution of controls. Additionally, partners will be involved in extension, outreach, and education as part of industry presentations, distributing diagnostic protocols, and publication of research articles.
