Research Project: Costs of Aflatoxin in the United States Peanut Industry

Location: National Peanut Research Laboratory

Project Number: 6044-13210-006-04-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 15, 2020
End Date: May 14, 2021

Objective:
The objective of this proposed research is to quantify the economic impact of aflatoxin contamination in the United States peanut industry and costs of removing aflatoxin from peanuts prior to commercial marketing.

Approach:
A similar study was conducted during the 1990's by the principal investigator. The American Peanut Council has requested an updated study be conducted to provide current estimates of the economic impact of aflatoxin on the US peanut industry. Much of the required data at the farm level are publicly available via USDA AMS reports on grade factors at farmer delivery. A questionnaire will be developed to obtain data from the buying point, first processor, and final processor industry levels to conduct the analysis. Results will be compiled to show the economic impact at the farmer, buying point, sheller, and manufacturer level and summarized for the US peanut industry. The data will be used to guide research in methods to reduce and eliminate aflatoxin.
