Research Project: Phosphorus Acid Maximum Residue Level Barrier to EU Export of California Tree Nuts (2020)

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality Research

Project Number: 2034-43000-040-093-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2020
End Date: May 15, 2020

Objective:
Conduct research to trace the signature of phosphorus acid throughout tree nut production and marketing channels.

Approach:
Utilize a cooperative effort between USDA, Agriultural Research Service (ARS), Dried Fruit and Nut Association of California, California industry, and foreign counterparts to adress retention of tree nut exports to the European Union. Elements of this Trade Assistance for Specialty Crops (TASC) activity will be conducted in phases: 1) the development of methods for phosphorous acid analysis, 2) the characterization of phosphorous acid residues from tree nuts, and 3) identifying dynamics of phosphorous acid residue formation and elimination in tree nuts and orchards.
