Research Project: Confirmatory Cold Treatment Trials on all Fruit Species of California Stone Fruit for Export to Australia

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality Research

Project Number: 2034-43000-043-031-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 15, 2020
End Date: Jan 31, 2022

Objective:
Conduct post harvest research to demonstrate the efficacy of in transit cold-treatments toward spotted wing drosophila in stone fruit destined for Australia.

Approach:
Utilize a cooperative effort between USDA-ARS, USDA-APHIS, California industry, and foreign counterparts to address pest-related barriers to export. Particular attention will be paid to the expansion and retention of export markets. Pests will be targeted with postharvest techniques including, in transit cold-treatments. Exploratory studies to define treatment efficacy against spotted wing drosophila were completed at the laboratory-scale and this research follows with pilot- and commercial- scale confirmatory testing. Treatment parameters will be tailored to infrastructural and logistical requirements of industry and contemporary methods of production, storage, and distribution. 2021 research involves validation of commercial-scale cold treatments.
