Objective:
The specific objectives are to (i) collect and identify aphid species and other
insect pests in suction traps; and, (iv) evaluate select soybean breeding lines for resistance to known aphid biotypes.
Approach:
Prepare and ship suction trap materials to all suction trap locations (April/May). Collect weekly trap data (May through October). Process submitted specimens weekly. Sort, identify and count the numbers of aphids and selected insect pests that are found in each trap each week during the growing season (objectives 1 to 3). Test soybean breeding materials under controlled conditions in the greenhouse for resistance to soybean aphid biotypes. These breeding lines will be compared to known checks with known soybean aphid resistance genes.
