Research Project: Creating Dihaploids for Hybrid Potato Breeding

Location: Vegetable Crops Research

Project Number: 5090-21220-005-027-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2020
End Date: Jun 30, 2020

Objective:
To create dihaploids for a diploid breeding effort to create hybrid potato cultivars from inbred lines.

Approach:
The potato growers we are partnering with grow fresh market potatoes in the central sands and southwest regions of Wisconsin. Each grows 10-20 cultivars on hundreds of acres of land. We will monitor their fields and, for each cultivar, we will collect one ideal stem (first flower bud just opening) from each of at least 500 plants. Cut stems will pollinated in the greenhouse with a dihaploid inducer. Seeds will be extracted and grown to confirm ploidy and fertility.
