Research Project: Modeling Incidental and Legacy Phosphorus Losses in Western Lake Erie Basin

Location: Food Animal Environmental Systems Research

Project Number: 5040-12630-007-028-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2020
End Date: Feb 28, 2025

Objective:
Develop and test models for predicting phosphorus losses from agricultural fields in the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB). This research addresses concerns identified by the Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance.

Approach:
- Organize and format existing data to machine-readable format. - Calibrate and testing of P loss models including APLE and SWAT. - Identifying model limitations and areas for model improvement. - Using models to run simulations to evaluate impact of different management strategies in reducing phosphorus loss in the Western Lake Erie Basin.
