Research Project: High Oleic/Low Linolenic Acid Soybean Deployment - Illinois

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 5070-21000-040-031-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2019
End Date: Sep 30, 2020

Objective:
Lead the HOLL breeding effort for maturity groups II and III. Develop and identify new high yielding soybean lines to be used in forward and backcrossing efforts for the high oleic/low linolenic traits. Integrate unfinished soybean germplasm from the backcrossing program into the HOLL breeding program.

Approach:
1) Final selection of fatty acid desaturase alleles in recurrent parents for conversion to HOLL to salvage the most advanced materials from the backcrossing program. 2) Crosses made between fixed HOLL donor lines to expand genetic diversity within the HOLL program. 3) Utilize existing selection strategies to select highest yielding HOLL lines to target for variety release.
