Objective:
The objective of this research is to enhance the seed quality in soybeans by limiting production of carbohydrates that are not digestible and increasing the final concentration of oil.

Approach:
Isotopic labeling pulse-chase experiments will be used to study the flow of carbon during seed dessication. Cooperators will perform detailed mass spectrometry evaluations based on isotopic labeling experiments. The focus on central carbon metabolism and those steps associated with remobilization of seed lipids that we hypothesize may account for changes in carbohydrate levels. The project will result in metabolic flux maps of soybean seeds during late stages of seed development and highlight pathway operation to guide metabolic engineering efforts.
