Location: Exotic & Emerging Avian Viral Diseases Research
Project Number: 6040-32000-072-27-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 1, 2019
End Date: Jan 30, 2021
Objective:
The cooperator will describe the pathology of the California 2018 Newcastle Disease virus (NDV) in 3 and 62-week-old chickens. Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained slides and paired slides stained for NDV antigen (IHC) from chicken tissues will be shared with the cooperator as well as formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks for conducting further studies including in situ hybridization.
Approach:
Cooperator will prepare, stain, and analyze tissue blocks collected from a recent pathogenesis experiment with the California 2018 virulent Newcastle disease virus. Detailed histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and other techniques will be used to identify and characterize histopathologic lesions attributed to virus infection in the chicken tissues. A detailed comparison and expert analysis of the similarities and differences in the pathologic lesions observed at 1, 2 and 3 days post virus infection between the 3 and 62-week-old chickens will be prepared. These results will be evaluated using the existing relevant literature, and a research publication will be prepared and submitted to an appropriate peer reviewed journal in collaboration with relevant co-authors.
