Research Project: Determining the Distribution and Natural Enemy Complex of the Roseau Cane Scale in Asia

Location: Beneficial Insects Introduction Research Unit

Project Number: 8010-22000-033-09-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 15, 2019
End Date: Nov 30, 2020

Objective:
To discover and characterize natural enemies of roseau cane scale and determine their natural distribution range in Asia; and characterize their association with host plant genotype differences that may be related to scale insect colonization success.

Approach:
• The University of Rhode Island will coordinate with cooperators (Louisiana State University, APHIS & ARS) to start the genetic characterization and comparison of the host plant samples from samples collected in Asia as compared to the phylogenetic analysis of the samples collected earlier in Louisiana (i.e., from native and introduced ranges for identification of a putative source population). • Samples of scale host plant material from each scale collection site will be preserved for molecular analyses with the aim of eventually pinpointing the Asian source population of the scale in Louisiana, and for comparison to the strain of Phragmites found in Louisiana that is being colonized by the scale.
