Research Project: Determining the Distribution and Natural Enemy Complex of the Roseau Cane Scale in Asia

Location: Beneficial Insects Introduction Research Unit

Project Number: 8010-22000-033-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2019
End Date: Aug 31, 2020

Objective:
To determine the native range distribution and natural enemy complex of the Roseau Cane Scale in Asia.

Approach:
• Work with co-PIs to produce a map of the tentative range of Roseau cane and RCS from museum and archive research. • Work with co-PIs to provide collecting protocols to Asian collaborators and organize spring collections. • Continue current research to collect scale samples and host plant material in Louisiana for genetic comparative analyses. • Coordinate with the USDA-ARS Systematic Entomology Laboratory to start genetic characterization and comparison of scale and parasitoid populations from native and introduced range for identification of a putative source population. Coordinate with University of Rhode Island to start the genetic characterization and comparison of the host plant samples from samples collected in Asia as compared to the phylogenic analysis of the samples collected earlier in Louisiana. • Update climate matching analyses.
