Research Project: Regional Temperature Inversion Climatology and Outreach

Location: Soil, Water & Air Resources Research

Project Number: 5030-11610-005-81-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2019
End Date: Aug 31, 2020

Objective:
Regional inversion climatology synthesis, to support NRCS air quality and Extension educator activities via a region-specific web resource or e-bulletin. At least two webinars for NRCS and partners on Midwest-Northern Plains air quality issues. Convene a Midwest-Northern Plains workshop on air quality and production agriculture science and applications. Facilitate identification of regional research and management needs among ARS, NRCS, Extension, mesonet operators, and researchers. Workshop summary

Approach:
Cooperator will collect available data on temperature inversions working with partners with state mesonets (automated weather station networks) in the region to determine climatologies of temperature inversion conditions in the region. Several states have begun work individually. Cooperator will help to regionalize this data for use in training and publication. The cooperator will work with the Midwest Climate Hub to develop educational materials and slides for NRCS and other USDA partner training via webinar. Cooperator will work with the MCH to develop and present the webinar. Additional educational materials will be shared with NRCS. Cooperator will help host a regional meeting among USDA staff (ARS, NRCS and others), state network partners, state mesonet operators, university extension and others to share the state of monitoring for temperature inversions and develop plans for future research and outreach needs.
