Research Project: 2019 Collection of Paraguayan Field Isolates of the Triticum Pathotype Magnaporthe Orizae for Pathogenicity Evaluation

Location: Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research

Project Number: 8044-22000-046-13-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2019
End Date: Sep 30, 2019

Objective:
1. Provide ARS with isolates of the Triticum pathotype of Magnaporthe oryzae collected throughout Paraguay where the disease occurs in 2019 in order to monitor for changes in virulence against currently identified sources of wheat blast resistance in U.S. germplasm. 2. Test for reliability of current diagnostics testing protocols.

Approach:
New isolates collected in Paraguay in 2019 will be initally tested against a set of established wheat differential cultivars and compared with the virulance of our current evaluation isolate (B-71). Those found to be highly aggressive against the resistant differentials will be used to retest new wheat germplasm shown resistant in initial screening.
