Research Project: Tomato Resistance-breaking Tospoviruses

Location: Subtropical Plant Pathology Research

Project Number: 6034-22000-045-014-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2019
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
Develop novel means for detection of resistance-breaking tospoviruses and tomato resistance genes for tospoviruses.

Approach:
Previous work has demonstrated that genetic markers can be identified for tomato spotted wilt virus isolates that are able to overcome (“break”) resistance genes for this virus in tomato. Similar markers have been identified for these resistance genes in tomato. Robust genetic markers will be developed for resistance breaking in both tomato spotted wilt virus and tomato chlorotic spot virus isolates in Florida. Concurrently, robust genetic markers will be developed for tomato spotted wilt virus and tomato chlorotic spot virus resistance in tomato. These tools and protocols will be used to analyze resistant tomato cultivars in Florida for resistance-breaking isolates of these two viruses.
