Research Project: Swine Coronavirus Molecular Research Targeting Nonstructural Proteins and Development of Novel Vaccines

Location: Virus and Prion Research

Project Number: 5030-32000-118-021-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2019
End Date: Sep 1, 2021

Objective:
Development and evaluation of novel swine coronavirus vaccines.

Approach:
An infectious swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) clone will be constructed. The pathogenicity of the virus derived from this clone will be evaluated in swine at ARS. Attenuating mutations previously demonstrated in another swine enteric coronavirus (porcine epidemic diarrhea virus) will be applied to the SADS-CoV. Attenuation of the SADS-CoV and potential for vaccine use will be confirmed through in vivo study.
