Research Project: Sampling Invertebrate Pollinator Assemblages in Mississippi Delta Operation Pollinator Sites

Location: Southern Insect Management Research

Project Number: 6066-22000-090-02-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2019
End Date: Mar 31, 2024

Objective:
Limited sampling has previously taken place at one Operation Pollinator location in Leflore County, Mississippi. Twelve Operation Pollinator locations have been established across the Mississippi Delta adjacent to agricultural fields. A subset of these sites will be monitored periodically throughout the growing season to collect and identify pollinators using these sites, and compare these locations to fallow fields in the same area without pollinator plantings.

Approach:
Three participating farms will be identified with both Operation Pollinator plantings and fallow land. These locations will be sampled at least once a month from first bloom until frost. Collections will be made by directed netting, malaise traps, modified pan traps, and/or vane traps. All specimens will be pinned and identified. Data will be analyzed to determine 1) pollinator species present, 2) time of year the pollinators are present, 3) floral resources present at each collection point, and 4) Operation Pollinator plots more diverse or species rich than fallow fields.
