Research Project: Improve Diagnosis of Pecan Bacterial Leaf Scorch

Location: Crop Germplasm Research

Project Number: 3091-21000-042-006-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2019
End Date: Jul 31, 2021

Objective:
The objective is to develop a sample pretreatment method using immunomagnetic carbon nanotubes for improving the detection level for Xylella fastidiosa causing pecan bacterial leaf scorch.

Approach:
We will improve reliability and practicality of the PCR-based diagnostic methods for pecan bacterial leaf scorch with additional sample preparation processes to remove phenolic compounds and increase the titer level of Xylella fastidiosa. The improvement of the current PCR methods will overcome the difficulties in the accurate detection of X. fastidiosa pecan strains at asymptomatic or early infection stages when false negative results occur frequently.
