Research Project: Plant Exploration in California, Arizona and New Mexico to Collect Amaranthus Germplasm for Crop Improvement

Location: National Germplasm Resources Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-280-016-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2019
End Date: Sep 30, 2020

Objective:
1) Obtain germplasm of Amaranthus species in California, Arizona and New Mexico. 2) Document populations of the species from which germplasm is collected.

Approach:
Germplasm of several Amaranthus species will be collected from wild populations in California, Arizona and New Mexico. Germplasm will be collected in the form of seeds and will be documented with locality, latitude and longitude, elevation, plant description and growing environment. Herbarium voucher specimens will be made when possible. Germplasm will be sent to the appropriate site of the USDA National Plant Germplasm System. A detailed trip report, including information on all samples obtained, will be provided to ARS.
