Research Project: Genetics of Insect Pests

Location: Arthropod-borne Animal Diseases Research

Project Number: 3020-32000-018-09-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 2, 2019
End Date: Jun 1, 2022

Objective:
The cooperator will use a genetic sequencing approach to evaluate phylogeny and population genetics of Culicoides populations with the objective of elucidating discrete populations, migration between populations, and relationships between species and sub-species in distinct geographic regions. Phylogenetic analysis will be used to describe the historical relationships between species.

Approach:
Cooperator will collect or receive Culicoides from the United States and various countries for DNA extraction. The DNA will be extracted and sequenced to identify mutations or single nucleotide polymorphism. Various analysis programs will sort and organize the data for phologenetic and population genetic analysis of individual species and species complexes.
