Research Project: Collaborations on Advanced Zoonotic Disease Technology Research to Develop Programs Addressing Threats to the National & World Agricultural Economy

Location: Operations

Project Number: 3022-32000-015-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2019
End Date: Dec 31, 2020

Objective:
To (a) investigate the landscape of scientific collaborators, stakeholders, industry, and educational partners to support animal disease research projects on emerging, high-consequence livestock diseases that threaten animal and human health; (b) identify opportunities for expanded community understanding and acceptance of NBAF research protecting livestock and the security of the food supply; and (c) design and develop programs to engage with stakeholders, industry, and educational partners to inform the development of the NBAF Science Program to support animal disease research projects on emerging, high-consequence livestock diseases that threaten animal and human health.

Approach:
The USDA, Agricultural Research Service’s National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (ARS-NBAF) and the Kansas State University’s National Agricultural Biosecurity Center (KSU-NABC) will work together on jointly developed research and information dissemination projects to understand and leverage the landscape of stakeholders and potential collaborators to allow NBAF to provide the nation with integrated research and response capabilities to protect animal and public health and enhance capabilities to protect livestock and the livestock industry from both naturally occurring and intentionally introduced disease threats.
