Research Project: Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere Storage for Non-Chemical Maintenance of Apple Quality

Location: Physiology and Pathology of Tree Fruits Research

Project Number: 2094-43000-008-004-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2018
End Date: Aug 31, 2021

Objective:
Determine effectiveness of dynamic headspace atmosphere (DCA) for maintaining apple fruit quality under regulatory conditions not allowing or only allowing reduced crop protectant inputs. Proper DCA monitoring ostensibly determines the optimum CA conditions for both reducing ripening and incidence of certain postharvest disorders without developing conditions associated with anaerobiosis.

Approach:
Monitor aroma production and fruit quality to determine effective DCA conditions for multiple economically important cultivars. Storage, fruit quality, and sensory assessment will be performed at Cornell University and fruit peel tissue shipped frozen to ARS-Wenatchee for aroma assessment using dynamic headspace/GC-MS analysis. Aroma data will be analyzed to find upregulation of compounds and pathways associated with anaerobic and other quality associated attributes to determine if storage controls are properly optimizing CA conditions.
